Biography

Michael Mabbutt, one of the world’s most experienced emerging market fixed income fund managers, joined 1167 Capital as a founding Partner in 2016.  Michael began his career with Norwich Union in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1986, where he was the Fixed Income Manager in charge of fixed income and cash portfolios.

In 1992, Michael moved to Baring Asset Management in London as Head of Emerging Market Debt; and in July 1993, he launched one of the world’s first global EMD funds, the Baring High Yield Bond Fund.  In 1997, he joined LGT Asset Management (now Invesco) as Head of Emerging Market Debt and ran one of the largest US emerging market debt mutual funds, the GT Global High Income Fund.

In 1998, Michael joined Thames River Capital as a founding Fund Manager in charge of the Global Credit division and subsequently launched two funds which had AUM of US$2.8 billion by the time he retired from managing the funds at the end of 2007.  He remained a Consulting Partner at the firm until the end of 2012 and also consulted to Stonehage Fleming, a multi-family office.  In 2013, he joined Liontrust Asset Management as Head of Global Credit.

 

Michael graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1985 with a degree in Statistics. He also holds certificates in Finance, Investment and Actuarial Techniques from the Faculty of Actuaries in Edinburgh.
